THE CRIMES
He and his co-accused, who was a minor at the time, lured Jasen Pangburn, 18, into the woods under the pretext of participating in target practice with a firearm.
Cofell and his militia pals had founded a vigilante group to rid their community of crime. They marked Pangburn for death because they wrongly believed he reported their gun thefts to Crime Stoppers, the decision says.
Cofell shot Pangburn in the chest. The teen ran for his life, but Cofell stopped him and bludgeoned him.
He and his accomplice then went to Pangburn’s home, where they killed Alfred Critchley, 77, and Virginia Critchley, 73.
Cofell was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in 1992 and will be eligible for full parole next fall.
