CIRCUMSTANCES

Shortly after midnight on June 15, 2012, Travis Baumgartner executed three of his G4S Cash Solutions coworkers — Michelle Shegelski, Eddie Rejano, and Brian Ilesic — each with point-blank gunshot to the back of the head. Another coworker, Matthew Schuman, was also shot, but survived with brain injuries.

The four victims and Baumgartner had been replenishing ATMs in the HUB Mall, a food court located in a student residence on the campus of the University of Alberta. Baumgartner shot three of his coworkers and locked them in the vault behind the ATM before shooting the another coworker in the armoured truck outside the facility and fleeing with the car.

Rejano was described by friends and coworkers “as a family man who also brought levity to their workplace.”

Rejano’s friend Jacob Smith told the CBC that Rejano’s “boys were the cutest things, and his wife was very nice. He was a devoted family man and whenever he talked about them he had the biggest smile on his face.”
