Johnny Altinger
1970 – 2008
Edmonton, Alberta

Circumstances

After meeting who he thought was a woman on the dating website Plenty of Fish, Altinger made plans to meet her on October 10, 2008.  He never returned.

Altinger was an early adopter of computer and web technology. “We were all very proud of Johnny’s ability to help others much older than he was with his technical savvy,” his parents stated during a victim impact statement at the trial of Mark Twitchell, the man who lured and murdered him after posing as a single woman online and engaging Altinger in chats that led up to his planned meeting.

Aspiring film-maker, Mark Twitchell, purportedly a fan of the TV show “Dexter”, catfished Altinger online and lured him to a set-up a kill room in a garage.

According to pages that the prosecution provided from Twitchell’s diary, he wrote after Altinger’s murder he wrote:

“I don’t remember the exact place and time it was that I decided to become a serial killer but I remember the sensation that hit me when I committed to the decision,” the document’s author wrote on the first page.

“It was a rush of pure euphoria.”
