THE CRIMES
Shortly after midnight on June 15, 2012, Travis Baumgartner executed three of his G4S Cash Solutions coworkers — Michelle Shegelski, Eddie Rejano, and Brian Ilesic — each with point-blank gunshot to the back of the head. Another coworker, Matthew Schuman, was also shot, but survived with brain injuries.
The four victims and Baumgartner had been replenishing ATMs in the HUB Mall, a food court located in a student residence on the campus of the University of Alberta. Baumgartner shot three of his coworkers and locked them in the vault behind the ATM before shooting the another coworker in the armoured truck outside the facility and fleeing with the car.
When he reached G4S Cash Solutions headquarters, CCTV cameras caught Baumgartner loading the money from the armoured truck into his own pickup and driving away.
He then left money with two friends and his mother, and threw out his phone. He was later caught at the US border the next day and arrested.
Baumgartner was heavily in debt when he committed the crimes. According to Maclean’s, “he owed $58,000 on his new pickup truck, his mother was on his case for rent and he owed at least two friends money.”
He had only been working for G4S Cash Solutions for two months before the murders. He had been unhappy at his job and fighting with his mother.
Baumgartner admitted to being “mad at the world” and in a “blind rage” when he shot his coworkers. And, although he showed regret during questioning, he confessed to an undercover officer in jail that he had purposely used hollow point bullets so his victims’ brains “are mush”.
