CIRCUMSTANCES
Shortly after midnight on June 15, 2012, Travis Baumgartner executed three of his G4S Cash Solutions coworkers — Michelle Shegelski, Eddie Rejano, and Brian Ilesic — each with point-blank gunshot to the back of the head. Another coworker, Matthew Schuman, was also shot, but survived with brain injuries.
The four victims and Baumgartner had been replenishing ATMs in the HUB Mall, a food court located in a student residence on the campus of the University of Alberta. Baumgartner shot three of his coworkers and locked them in the vault behind the ATM before shooting the another coworker in the armoured truck outside the facility and fleeing with the car.
Ilesic was described as a good friend and devoted father to his 12 year-old daughter.
“He was pretty laid back. He always thought of everybody else before himself,” Ilesic’s friend Cielito Villanueva told The Edmonton Sun. “When he would invite me over to his place, it was always like, ‘Do you need a drink, do you need something, did you have supper?’ He was always accommodating and always made sure that everybody was taken care of.”
“He loved his daughter. He would pretty much do whatever he could for her,” he said.
